Irada Organization affirms that the Houthi militia’s demolition of Sheikh Al-Maqrami’s home following his killing represents a dangerous continuation of acts of retaliation and the targeting of homes and civilian property. It reveals an approach that does not stop at targeting individuals, but extends to their homes, property, and families.
The Organization condemns this act in the strongest terms and affirms that the demolition of homes and destruction of civilian property without military necessity constitute serious violations of the rules of international humanitarian law and warrant investigation, accountability, and the prosecution of those responsible, without allowing them to escape punishment.
Irada Organization calls on the international community, the United Nations, and international human rights mechanisms to take serious steps to hold the leaders of the Houthi militia and those responsible for these violations accountable, and to support international legal accountability mechanisms for crimes and violations committed against civilians in Yemen.
The Organization also calls on the Yemeni government and the competent authorities to monitor and document all cases involving the demolition of homes, killings, and attacks against civilians and property; preserve the evidence related to such cases; and work to prosecute the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
Irada Organization holds the Yemeni government and the legitimate authorities responsible for taking all possible measures to protect citizens and their property, defend the rights of victims and their families, and work seriously to ensure that the perpetrators of these violations do not escape punishment.
Irada Organization against Torture and Enforced Disappearance reiterates its call for an end to the policy of demolishing homes and acts of retaliation, and for accountability and justice for victims. The Organization affirms that serious crimes and violations should not be subject to statutes of limitations and that their perpetrators must be held accountable in accordance with the law.
