Kidnapping of the lawyer Abdulmajeed Sabrah – Condemnation Statement

Irada Organization against Torture and Enforced Disappearance strongly condemns the kidnapping of lawyer Abdulmajeed Sabra by Houthis militias, storming of his office and confiscation of his personal belongings, following his public announcement of readiness to defend detainees arrested in connection with the commemoration of the Sept 26 Revolution.

Lawyer Abdulmajeed Sabra is one of the most prominent human rights defenders, particularly in the cases of detainees and forcibly disappeared persons in Houthis-run prisons. Throughout his years of legal and human rights advocacy, Sabra has been subjected to a long series of harassments and death threats, including repeated raids on his office, being barred from attending sham court hearings and being briefly detained for purposes of intimidation.

The kidnapping of lawyer Sabra once again highlights the systematic repressive approach adopted by Houthis militia against lawyers, human rights defenders and advocates of public freedoms, especially those engaged in defending detainees in their prisons or exposing violations committed against civilians to public opinion, the international community and the United Nations.

Irada Organization against Torture and Enforced Disappearance holds Houthis militia fully responsible for the safety of lawyer Abdulmajeed Sabra and all other detainees. The organization calls on the UN Envoy, the United Nations and international human rights organizations to condemn this crime and take immediate action to put pressure on Houthis militia to release all detainees.

It is worth noting that the kidnapping of lawyer Sabra comes as part of a wide campaign of arbitrary arrests carried out during the Yemeni people’s celebrations of the 63rd anniversary of September 26 Revolution. The Organization strongly condemns all such violations and arbitrary arrests against civilians.Issued by:
